General Surgery
General Surgery Defined:
General surgery, as a medical specialty, deals with abdominal organs and/or organs in the area of the torso including, but not limited to, intestines, esophagus , stomach, small bowel, liver, colon, pancreas, bile ducts and bladder. This surgical specialty often involves the thyroid gland (this would depend on the availability of neck and head surgery specialists).
General surgery may also involve diseases of the skin, soft tissue, hernias, and breasts. The list of specialties can be quite lengthy, so we have put together a list of the most popular general surgeries that people request through Medical Tours Costa Rica.
Despite the name, General Surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on the torso.
A. Its scope:
This is indeed a medical specialty, and it requires great familiarity and knowledge of a broad spectrum of diseases that may require surgical treatment. Since this is such a broad category, the depth and breadth of knowledge required of surgical practitioners is extensive, and their education, experience, and training will vary according to the category of the disease.
The surgical specialist is expected to be knowledgeable and competent in diagnosing and treating a full spectrum of diseases. On the other hand, there may be some diseases whereby comprehensive training, education, knowledge and experience is not gained during the standard period of education and surgical training.
B. Certification in this specialty:
Anyone seeking certification should have experience in all of the following specialties:
- Alimentary Tract
- Abdomen and its Contents
- Breast, Skin and Soft Tissue
- Endocrine System
- Organ Transplantation
- Pediatric Surgery
- Surgical Critical Care
- Surgical Oncology (including Head and Neck Surgery)
- Trauma/Burns and Acute Care Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
This field not only requires the specialist to have knowledge about operations, a surgical specialist should also be expected to be fully competent and expert in many subcategories.
A surgical specialist is required to be technically proficient in performing essential procedures/operations, not only in the above-stated fields, but he/she must also posses familiarity, knowledge, and proficiency (in some cases) with the least common and more complex operations in each of the above-stated fields.
Any physician involved in this specific field of medicine must also possess clinical knowledge, and this includes physiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathology (including neoplasia), and anatomy.
Knowledge of the scientific foundations, including wound healing; infection; fluid management; shock and resuscitation; immunology; antibiotic usage; metabolism; and use of enteral and parenteral nutrition.
Practitioners in this surgical specialty must also have knowledge of and experience and skills in the following specializations: stabilization and referral or clinical evaluation and management of patients with surgical diseases; management of preoperative, operative and postoperative care. In order to be effective, a practitioner in this surgical specialty must also be effective in the management of comorbidities and complications; and must possess knowledge of appropriate use and interpretation of radiologic and other diagnostic imaging.
C. Other General Surgery Disciplines:
There are several disciplines that could fall under one of the categories in this medical specialty, but these particular categories have special training programs that might be related to, but are considered to be separate from, general surgery. The certified general surgeon is required to be familiar with operative techniques and diseases in the areas mentioned below.
The certified surgeon must have knowledge and experience that will allow him/her to diagnose and manage a select group of conditions related to these areas and their specific subcategories. On the other hand, additional training is required for a surgical specialist to be able to be knowledgeable in these areas and to be able to manage them.
- Organ Transplantation
- Pediatric Surgery
- Thoracic Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
D. Moreover, a certified specialist must be able to recognize, understand, and provide early diagnosis, management and appropriate referral for emergent and/or urgent issues in the following areas:
- Gynecology
- Urology
- Neurosurgery
- Orthopaedics and Hand Surgery
E. Management and team-based interdisciplinary care of specific patient groups are also requirements of a certified general surgeon:
- Terminally ill patients, to include palliative care and the management of pain, weight loss and cachexia in patients with malignant and chronic conditions.
- Morbidly obese patients, to include metabolic derangements, weight-loss surgery and the counseling of patients and families.
- Geriatric surgical patients, to include operative and nonoperative care, management of comorbid chronic diseases, and the counseling of patients and families.
- Culturally and ethnically diverse groups of patients.
As you can see, the requirements to become a surgical specialist in this medical field are quite extensive, even more so when you consider the extra education, knowledge, and experience that some of the sub-specialties within this field require.
