Laparoscopic Gastric Plication | Gastric Imbrication | Greater Curvature Plication
Super Sleeve – Gastric Plication – Gastric Imbrication – Greater Curvature Plication:
A Super Sleeve is a Promising, Less Invasive Weight Loss Procedure!
There are several different types of bariatric or surgical weight loss procedures. Some restrict the amount of food that can be eaten at one time, such as a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery and a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy; while others bypass portions or segments of the intestines in order to limit calorie absorption, such as a Roux-en-y gastric bypass.
On the other hand, a super sleeve or laparoscopic gastric plication differs in that it reduces the size of the stomach, and food intake is limited. A super sleeve as also known as Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication or LGPC.
How is a Super Sleeve or Gastric Plication Performed?
A super sleeve is done as a laparoscopic outpatient procedure whereby five or six tiny incisions are made in the abdomen. These incisions allow a video camera or laparoscope, and other long instruments into the abdominal cavity.
Once the incisions are made and the instruments are in place, one or more large folds are sewn in the stomach. The stomach is reduced by about 70% during a super sleeve, laparoscopic gastric plication or gastric imbrication, so it will hold less food, and this fact may help you eat less.
In contrast to other weight loss methods, a super sleeve involves no cutting (other than the small incisions), no stapling, and there is no removal of stomach tissue or intestines. If needed, a super sleeve, gastric plication or imbrication may be reversed or converted to another procedure if necessary.
How is Weight Loss Caused by a Super Sleeve, Gastric Plication or Gastric Imbrication:
A super sleeve or laparoscopic gastric plication is known as a restrictive procedure, meaning that it greatly reduces stomach size, and it limits the amount of food that may be eaten at one time. On the other hand, it does not restrict nutrient absorption, nor does it bypass the intestines.
When people who undergo a super sleeve procedure eat a small amount of food, they feel full very quickly, and this feeling of being sated will continue for several hours. A super sleeve or gastric plication has also been known to cause a decrease in appetite, which also helps in weight loss.

About Gastric Plication – Gastric Imbrication – Super Sleeve – & Greater Curvature Plication:
Essentially, all of the above terms are used to describe a weight loss procedure conducted on an outpatient basis which involves both low-risk and a quick recovery time. This bariatric procedure is done laparoscopically, which is a method of surgery that uses just five or six small incisions in the abdomen.
Imbrication is done during the surgery, and this simply means that the outer wall of the stomach is folded in on itself. Once the outer wall of the stomach is folded, or once imbrication has taken place, plication takes place, which is simply holding it together with sutures, and the end result is a super sleeve.
What happens is that a narrow, long, tube-shaped stomach is created by the process (a super sleeve), and the new stomach has a reduced food capacity. In addition, since the natural stomach is kept intact, the super sleeve can be reversed if necessary.
There are other names for Gastric Plication Surgery, and these include Gastric Imbrication, Gastric Sleeve Plication, Vertical Gastric Plication, Vertical Sleeve Plication, Laparoscopic Gastric Plication (LGP) and Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication (LGCP).
Gastric Plication Surgery Recovery:
As mentioned previously, this procedure is conducted on an outpatient basis, and a great majority of the patients are back to business as usual in about one week. However, during the first few days after surgery, patients may feel nauseous as their body adapts to the smaller food capacity in the stomach..
You will have to follow a liquid recovery diet for about two to three weeks after the surgery. But you can slowly incorporate solid food during the following two to three weeks.
Gastric Plication Surgery Advantages:
- Stomach tissue is not cut, stapled, or removed.
- The risk of early and late complications is minimal.
- Recovery is quick.
- Reversal is easy.
- Hunger is reduced and eating is restricted.
- You can expect weight loss that is comparable to other bariatric procedures.
- The cost of Gastric Plication Surgery is usually lower than other procedures.
Gastric Plication Surgery Disadvantages:
- There is a lack of long-term data regarding the procedure
- It is only performed by a few doctors at this point.
Other Weight Loss Procedures vs. Gastric Plication:
When compared to a gastric sleeve procedure, you can expect no complications from bleeding or leaks because of resection. Since the natural stomach is removed, cut, or stapled, these risks are not present. In addition, and as has been stated previously, you can reverse imbrication since it is held by sutures.
If it is compared to a gastric bypass procedure, there is no dumping syndrome or malabsorption because the intestine is not rerouted. There are no stomach problems since the outlet of the natural stomach outlet is kept intact.
When it is compared to laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, no medical implant is required, and there is not need for periodic adjustments with a super sleeve. There are also no band problems such as erosion, slippage, or leaking; no port problems such as displacement, leaking, or infection, and there is no stomach blockage with a super sleeve.
